The GBP Institute for Energy

GBP Institute for Energy

The GBP Institute for Energy (GIE) is a state-of-the-art learning facility designed to promote energy efficiency through technical education and better understanding of clean coal technology. Located inside GBP’s Panay plant complex in Iloilo City, the two-storey, 1,863 square meter training facility houses five training rooms, laboratories, an e-learning classroom, an audio-visual room, a science centrum, and a convenarium.

A unique feature of GIE is the specialized simulator for the Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) technology — the same technology being used in three of GBP’s largest plants in Iloilo and Cebu. The CFB simulator enables GBP’s plant operators to study and practice different responses to real life operational situations including emergencies that require critical decision-making thereby harnessing our people’s technical expertise and preparedness during operational and maintenance contingencies.

Advancing GBP’s thrust for both efficiency and sustainability, GIE also produces part of its own power requirements through the 240 solar panels installed on the building which can produce up to 66 kW of electricity.

At present, GIE serves as the learning and development center for all GBP employees. It provides both technical and soft-skills training, including the following:

  • Basic CFB Power Plant Operator Training
  • Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training for Power Plants
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment and Control
  • Lock out Tag out (LOTO)
  • Confined Space Entry
  • Personal Effectiveness
  • Accounting and Finance 101
  • Proficient Business Communication
  • Mentoring and Coaching

As an extended service, GIE also sponsors trainings for GBP’s customers and adopted communities. These trainings include self-awareness workshops for GBP’s scholars and Sangguniang Kabataan officials of the adopted barangays; leadership trainings for leaders and potential leaders of distribution utilities; medical trainings for barangay health workers; professional image trainings for young adults, etc.
